“Caregiving 101” on KKYX Radio 680am San Antonio, Texas
Hosts: Starr & Bob Calo–oy
Guest: Frances Parker
Broadcast Date: May 24, 2008

With 10 years in the volunteer field of Urban Hospice, Frances has plenty to share with caregivers.  In one of his poems, he refers to the roller coaster ride of reality through joy and fear.  Bob says “Know that we understand that  ride, and we try to level it out for them and let them live as close to a normal life as possible.”

Transportation problems are now arising of children that are caregivers…what are they going to do when they don’t have a licence to drive when it is necessary to take the patient to the doctor?  Any caregiver that has a patient in a nursing home needs to be aware of how that facility has been evaluated by the State.  This information should posted publicly in the facility. Often it is not. Go to consumersreports.org/nursinghome  or medicare.gov to research it yourself.

What would you do if you were told by your doctor that you only have 6 months left to live on this earth?  This is unimaginable for most of us.  Yet caregivers are in the middle of this and must be able to not only “keep an even keel” for themselves, but must be proactive for others.  It’s like calorie intake, and you need to provide calorie energy for two (eat twice as much).

Starr & Bob Calo-oy created CaregiversAdvice.net to help, encourage, and support caregivers. Through weekly Radio Shows on KKYX 680am San Antonio, they host special guests who cover many unique topics concerning caregiving. They also have weekly TV Segments on KENS TV 5 San Antonio where they share caregiving and marriage tips. All of these programs are archived as Radio Podcasts and TV Podcasts for your easy listening. Visit their sister site, Marriage101.net for marriage help and encouragement. Starr has written Four Books on Caregiving.
