Ron Flores of Family Service Association of San Antonio, one of the oldest non-profit agencies in the community, discusses free help available to caregivers and their loved ones.  They try to improve and strengthen families in our community and lessen the impact of caregiving on the baby-boomer generation.

Ron helps them deal with the loss of independence and re-engage them in the community as well.  He addresses caregiving burnout and lets the caregiver know they are not alone.  His goal is helping seniors maintain Independence, control, and dignity and allow them to stay in their home as long as possible.  Often there are events or support groups that are easily available, and this agency can help “hook you up”.  He also helps the caregiver learn to adapt to this new situation as well.  It is a very scary life change when you find that your parents aren’t in control anymore, and that your roles have reversed.

There are many volunteer positions available at Family Services.  They do much more than just hold the senior’s hand.  They play cards, read aloud, watch television, generally interact in ways to give the primary caregiver a break.  The kindest gift you can give to a caregiver on any holiday is sleep and respite.  Reach-out to your loved-one, if you have somebody in your family that provides such care.  The relief you can provide with such a simple offer is immeasurable.
