Fran Mendez, president of We Are Alive for 11 years, which provides special services for your loved ones, mainly the terminally ill speaks to us about the services they offer.
“We Are Alive” will provide services for chronic or terminally ill, and are able to help people with the resources that other agencies can’t provide. They try to fill-in where needed. They take referrals. Whoever is taking care of the patient or senior needs to contact this organization if they need extra help.
They have a committee of three, that helps prioritize needs, whether it’s rent, medications and copayments, utilities, food delivery, clothes or a wig for cancer treatments. Fran says “What good is quality of life if you have nowhere to live?” They can’t do this long-term but can provide partial and temporary help. It’s no-cost, and an all volunteer staff that provides these services. They don’t receive grants and are not funded by any government or agency help. They take public and private donations only, and sometimes have fund-raising events. They accept clothes, furniture and moving-aids, as well as non perishable food donations.
They have helped the homeless here in S.A for many years, and distribute blankets to them that are easily rolled and carried in their bags. Sometimes they hand out boxes of food that can be eaten there and then for convenience, no questions asked.
