Sometimes we have to care for those who did not well care for us.  Don’t expect to get justice for those wrongs.  Unforgiveness is bad for you emotionally and physically.  It doesn’t hurt the one at whom you are angry.  You might join a support group to help you deal with painful feelings.

Have a meeting with your family and let them know that you are going to forgive and move on and treat your loved one with dignity, respect, and love rather than make them suffer for their crimes.  Create new memories and photos; don’t rely on those from the past that might cause bad feelings.

When caring for a loved one, it is important to care for yourself.  There are several things you can do in order to accomplish this.  Forgive yourself for all the things you did as a child to your parents.  Get family and friends to join in on the caregiving.  Get non family members to help; friends of yours or your loved one’s.  Get help from your community.  Get 15 minutes of absolute rest time each day.  Hire help.  Work on a hobby.  Laugh and let out other emotions – don’t hold them in – cry when you need to cry.

Some dementia patients feel the need to go, an anxiety to get out of there. They may want to go to find a family member or think they are going to the playground where they grew up. You never know when or why they may wander, but they often do.

Be aware of things outside like pools. Lable dentures, glasses, etc. with their personal information in case they get lost. Dont’ fuss at them for running off, speak softly and tell them it is time to come home.

A single person with no children has been put upon to care for their mom because they ‘have more time than their siblings with children’ what do you say?  Don’t let them make you do it by yourself.  List all the things you do for mom and for yourself – ask them what all they want to do.  If they cannot physically help they should offer money to get pay for the help.  If no money comes, offer to sell the Mom’s house and belongings to pay for the help and for her care to cover the extra expenses.  An only child or the only one around is the only one to care for Mom.  Go to a support group and offer to care for someone else’s loved one to make money to care for Mom.  One person feels bad when leaving Dad – what do they do?  Just leave, just like you do with children.  Give him a treat at the end of the visit or leave at a meal time (don’t stop going for feeling guilty).

Remember to engage your loved one in fun activities when you are caring for them.  Add to your loved one’s life by looking into their past.  They can still enjoy their life, not just sit around all day.  Get out old collections or photos and have them tell you about them.  Travel is great!  Plan the trip with your loved one…it may be somewhere they have always wanted to go.  Get them a tutor to teach them something they have always wanted to learn.  Go to different sporting games or set the TV for watching sports.  Try to re-create the fun that your loved one used to live.

Sometimes patients with Dementia will become violent – even though they may have always been very calm and gentle.  This is only because of the Dementia – it is from the brain, not them.  Look to see if they are experiencing pain, fatigue, wrong medications or having medication interaction, noise, soiled diapers, being hungry/thirsty.  These are a few reasons they may be violent.  Other reasons are bathroom needs, stressful activities, or time of day.  Don’t argue with them!

Adult diapers are very different to change than children’s diapers and can be a real challenge.  It is difficult to get an adult to begin using diapers or to keep them on!  Talk to your loved one to distract them while you are changing their diaper.  Roll your loved one over one way and then the other to get them on padding and to get on the diaper.  Keep them CLEAN!
