This Week’s Featured Radio Podcast
Listen to Volume # 076 —“Bill Morrow” (Podcast)
“Caregiving 101” on KKYX Radio 680am San Antonio, Texas
Hosts: Starr & Bob Calo–oy
Guest: Bill Morrow
Broadcast Date: August 1, 2009
Bill Morrow of CSIdentity says that you need to understand how YOUR identity is being used today. By the time you are in your 30′s, 40′s & 50′s, your ID exists in hundreds of thousands of computers and databases around the world. These will exist long after you are gone from this earth.
Bill goes-on to say that you should have multiple passwords and should change them monthly. Most people use their name and birthday just so that it is easier to remember. Unfortunately that is easy for the criminal to figure-out. Do not leave your mail in the mailbox for hours at a time and shred your “junk-mail” . When it gets to the trashcan on the curb, it is public domain and easily taken.
Ask your nursing home or caregiver “What is your background screening policy, and what does your background check do?” Many companies just check a criminal database for the name. Unless you can verify their name, the background will not do you any good, as they will be using someone’s name.

Listen to Volume # 075 —“Matt Spahn” (Podcast)
“Caregiving 101” on KKYX Radio 680am San Antonio, Texas
Hosts: Starr & Bob Calo–oy
Guest: Matt Spahn
Broadcast Date: July 25, 2009
Matt Spahn of the Spahn Law Firm asks, “Are you prepared? Does your family know your end-of-life preferences?” His specialty is in Elder Law. There are many “holes” in the system for the elderly.
A Durable Power of Attorney is a financial and legal Power of Attorney. It allows the person with it to take care of your financial and legal needs when you are incapacitated. A Medical Power of Attorney is a very powerful and important document and can even save your life. If you become incapacitated, they can make medical decisions on your behalf. It is important to also sign the HIPPA form to allow that person to know all of your medical information when the time comes. (It is a good idea to place a magnet or note on your refrigerator that shows your Power of Attorneys contact information.
A DNR (Do Not Resuscitate Order) should keep you from being resuscitated once you meet the criteria you specified, however it is possible for family to override it in some cases. The DNR is part of your Living Will. Once you have the paperwork in order, you should tell your family what you have done and make your wishes known so there won’t be any issues when the time comes.
If someone has a lot of money, dies, and does not have a will, your loved ones will lose a lot of time and money. Having a will may also help to avoid a lot of fighting over things after your death. This is also where you would state guardianship desires for your children. After you have done your legal will, it is time to make a statement in writing for your children to know what you want and expect of them. This would be more personal than the legal will.
