We need to have as many options as possible when we are dealing with our loved ones in nursing home placement.   Valerie cheerfully spoke about how nice it is to have a more personalized residential home setting.  This is more comfortable for those who don’t have the requirements only to be found in a nursing care facility.  There ARE options out there, and you should use them! Bobby and Kasi Turner met in high school, fell in love and shortly after graduation got married.  They were in a terrible automobile accident soon after that when a large truck ran into them from behind when they were at a stop sign…and the truck was doing 70 miles per hour at the time.  They were both hospitalized with neck and back injuries, and it took months of physical therapy to partially recover.  They both worked despite migraines and intractable pain, moving from one job to another, one doctor to another throughout the years. Pastor Pete had spent a lot of time helping others with similar troubles and situations throughout his career.  He had not given much thought that it would or could happen to him or his wife.  His wife Mary Ann was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease one day.  After about ten years, with many blessings and help from fellow parishioners (which she calls her angels), they could no longer stay by herself.  At one point there were around 65 volunteers helping-out.  It is a wonderfully rewarding experience it is to help others in this way. WellMed partnered with the City of San Antonio, Department of Community Initiatives to supply free flu shots to all seniors in San Antonio, even if they weren’t their patients.  They even helped provide about 3000 flu vaccines to those home-bound patients that were unable to get to their doctor’s office.  What a wonderful service.  They go-on to say that it is a myth that the flu shot is dangerous.  The flu vaccine does NOT cause the flu. I want to share with you today  a tremendous service for you caregivers.  It is our sincere pleasure to bring you services and resources to make your caregiving job much, much easier.  These guests are both with House Call Doctors, a company that provides a service from days gone by, and most would think are only a thing of the past!  Founded in 2000 in Austin Texas, they provide services in other cities here in Texas as well.  Basically you don’t necessarily need to have home health care, or even be bed bound to use their services.  Many people just don’t have access to transportation, friends or family to drive them to a doctor’s appointment.  Some of their patients are just too ill to drive, or live in a rural setting and the drive into town is lengthy. Pastor Hambree oversees several life groups helping many needy individuals from patients to caregivers.  These are people who are actively seeking help there in Community Bible Church right here in San Antonio, Texas.  Some are busy caregivers who need a break, and others are those who don’t have a car, or maybe just need a little company once in a while.  When he came on staff there at CBC, there was a need by several individuals that were taking care of their parents to help them with shopping for groceries, meals and transportation of getting individuals to and from places.  Groups were put together to help minister and help them in this service. Siblings often argue about the care of their parents.  They all have their own ideas on what would be best for them.  It is most difficult to get everybody all on the same page with prognosis and best care for them at any time.  Sometimes other siblings criticize from afar, which isn’t useful, and usually drives the actual caregiver crazy.  Instead of being happy and pulling together, this kind of situation brings out many of those old feelings and injustices from the past, which reflects on current issues.  Sometimes these feelings have been lying dormant for decades even.  Often it’s about “you were always mom’s favorite.”  Bitterness and anger arise concerning those siblings who don’t come around often enough, or call enough, or write enough.
