Nora Jean Levin began the organization, CFAD.org or caringatadistance.org and has written a book for those trying to manage that care.
CFAD.ORG is a non-profit organization that makes no money from advertisers, which helps keep them honest brokers. Many organizations have weird acronyms and who knows what they are and what help they can offer. This organization helps you know what is out there and what these companies really do.
This site was designed by long distance caregivers. Their mission is to try to connect these long distance caregivers with the local resources/services with the services they have been searching for. They provide an easy-to-use database.
There are 6.9 million Americans that struggle to care for a senior, parent or other loved-one that lives at a distance. They help you find local help for your loved-one that face special challenges. CFAD can help you prepare for possible upcoming emergencies, and also offer ideas on what you can do to help them when you visit.
It costs about $9,000.00 dollars to care for a loved one at a distance. This is generally travel and outside-help costs.
For the caregiver in crisis, and in need of immediate local assistance there is a Service Directory link that will get you to a local professional or telephone counselor. They have a What-To-Do and Library link for those who need to learn more about elder care and distance caregiving. For those in need of upcoming-decision counseling, they can help you plan and organize a free Conference Call so that you can share concerns and recent news.
On their website they have a care coordination card that provides emergency contacts, phone numbers, addresses, special medical conditions and medications.
There are monitoring cameras that can help you both communicate through the internet. You can both see one another and converse. Skype provides one method. This can help you/them feel safe, and you will know what is going-on. You can keep an eye on things this way. They can be motion sensitive too! You may worry that there is a home care nurse coming into the house, and there is a possibility of abuse.
Tips and suggestions for having your aged loved one who doesn’t want help but needs it when they live alone:
Have a doctor visit IN a lab coat… this commands respect and they will allow it more often than not.
Tell the elder (dementia?) that “they” are checking-out the neighborhood and making sure that everybody is okay and needs are being met.
