Question

My uncle is in the latter stages of Parkinson’s disease and has dementia and is staying with us. I can’t seem to get him to eat safely. He chokes on everything, even water. What can I do to help him?

Answer

There are several liquid thickeners on the market. I personally use “Thickett” but there are others out there. You add this powder to whatever liquid you want to serve and by doing so, the patient is able to swallow much easier. Don’t give him unblended foods. Make a list for yourself of soft foods he tolerates and put it on your fridge. Mashed potatoes that have no lumps, puddings (especially the high, caloric ones like Boost or Ensure), the soft insides of favorite pies, mashed beans, pureed spaghetti, ice cream (plain, of course; no nuts) or mac n’cheese. This way, you can always have ideas at your fingertips to serve him. Give him small amounts, use a straw or a sipper cup with the straw built in and stroke his throat for sensation sake as he swallows and be sure to verbally encourage and praise him for all his efforts and success.
